Understanding Sand Casting
Since 2,000 B.C., sand casting has been used to turn raw metal into something beautiful and personal. A wax carving of your design is pressed into tightly packed sand to form a mold. The wax is removed, molten metal is poured in, and once cooled, the piece is taken out, cleaned, and polished. It's hands-on, unique — and has a few important limitations to know.
What Works Well
- Classic domed and flat bands
- Textures along the sides of the band
- Clean, solid forms
- Flush-set stones (cast in place)
- Simple raised or protruding side designs (nothing carved INTO the ring)
- Bold, solid shapes
What Doesn't Work
- Engraving or text on the face of the ring
- Prong settings
- Intricate designs on the face (logos, crests, stars)
- Deeply recessed or negative-space designs
- Soft gemstones under 8 on the Mohs scale (quartz, opal, pearl, amethyst, etc.)
- Fine geometric patterns or tiny details
The face of the ring doesn't press directly into the sand, so fine face details don't capture. Side details press in directly and hold much better.
